Axis deer are originally from India and Sri Lanka where they are referred to as Chital or spotted deer. They are found throughout Texas but mainly in the Hill Country. Axis deer breed year-round and have a gestation period of 7 ½ months. They have a diet of grass, forbs, and any other wildlife feed. The doe usually weighs between 110 – 120 lbs. and the mature bucks can easily weigh 200 lbs. Axis can be hunted year-round but are primarily hunted in the spring and summer months when the majority of the bucks are hard horned and the main rut occurs.
